2005

ECP Founded

Energy Capital Partners was founded in 2005 building upon Doug’s previous experience and with the vision of being a market leader in electrification, reliability and decarbonization investing.

2006

ECP Acquires Hydro Platform

In November 2006, ECP acquired FirstLight Power, a 1,440MW portfolio of 15 high-quality power plants (primarily hydro).

2007

ECP Forms Utility Scale Solar Developer

ECP formed NextLight Renewable Power, LLC in December 2007 to develop, acquire, own, manage and operate utility-scale solar power plants in the western U.S.

2010

ECP Forms Diversified Natural Gas Platform

From 2010 through 2013, ECP formed EquiPower, a diversified power generation platform of nine primarily natural gas power plants, totaling 4,685 MWs.

2011

ECP Acquires Critical Power Generator in Texas

In July 2011, ECP acquired Odessa, a 1,000 MW combined cycle natural gas turbine power plant in West Texas that was critical to maintaining reliability during a period of historic heat waves.

2013

ECP Takes Private Waste Management Business

In May 2013, ECP acquired EnergySolutions, Inc., a diversified global provider of low-level nuclear waste management and services to government and commercial customers, for approximately $1.2 billion in a take-private transaction.

2014

ECP Acquires Waste-To-Energy Platform

In December 2014, ECP carved-out Wheelabrator Technologies, Inc. from Waste Management, Inc. Wheelabrator was a leader in the safe and environmentally sustainable conversion of municipal solid waste and other renewable waste fuels into clean energy.

2015

ECP Acquires Wind & Storage Operator & Developer

Terra-Gen is an owner, operator and developer of utility-scale renewable and clean energy assets with facilities located across the western U.S. The company has over 9 GW of utility-scale wind, solar, storage and geothermal assets currently in operation or under development.

2016

ECP Invests in Residential Solar

In March 2016, ECP invested in Sunnova Energy Corp., a fast-growing owner and operator of residential solar and storage assets, serving homeowners across the U.S.

2017

ECP Takes Private Leading National Natural Gas & Renewable Platform

ECP closed the $17 billion take-private of Calpine in March 2018. Calpine Corporation is one of America’s largest generators of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources with a portfolio of 77 power plants accounting for approximately 26,000 megawatts of generation capacity.

2018

ECP Acquires Large Scale Recycler

In March 2018, ECP acquired Gopher Resource, a North American recycler of automotive batteries, an operator of two major recycling facilities in Eagan, MN and Tampa, FL.

2019

ECP Acquires Developer of Energy Storage

In June 2019, ECP acquired Convergent Energy & Power Inc., a pure-play developer, owner, and operator of energy storage assets in the U.S. and Canada with 215 MW of solar and 570 MW / 1,941 MWh of storage operating, in-construction, awarded or contracted projects

ECP Undertakes Coal to Gas Conversion Projects

After acquiring Heartland Generation, a portfolio of ten facilities with representing 1,800 MW of capacity in Alberta and British Columbia, providing reliable and affordable energy to customers across Canada, ECP undertook the conversion of two of its coal plants to natural gas.

2021

ECP Begins Construction on Solar Battery and Storage Project

In August 2021, construction began on Terra-Gen’s large scale renewable energy project, the Edwards & Sanborn solar and energy storage project, an integrated solar powered battery storage facility, that will produce clean energy for more than 158,000 homes and displace more than 307,000 tons of CO2 annually.

ECP Acquires Beneficial Re-Use Business

In May 2021, ECP acquired Liberty Tire Recycling, premier provider of tire recycling services in North America. The company saves more than 190 million tires per year from the waste stream, recycling approximately three billion pounds of rubber for innovative, sustainable materials and products.

ECP Invests in Community Solar

In June 2021, ECP acquired Pivot Energy, a national commercial and community solar developer. Pivot provides community solar to local governments, school districts, non-profits, low income housing authorities and residential customers.

2022

ECP Acquires Leading Renewable Fuels Recycler and Supplier

In April of 2022, ECP acquired Restaurant Technologies, Inc, an industry leading provider of closed-loop oil management solutions to restaurants and food service customers across the U.S. RTI is the largest independent source of used cooking oil in the United Sates, which represents the most desirable and lowest carbon intensity feedstock available to the rapidly growing renewable diesel market.

ECP V Makes First Investment in Energy Efficiency

In July 2022, ECP acquired Metrus Energy, an energy efficiency provider that structures capital upgrade projects for customers through innovative pay-for-performance contracts that capitalize energy efficiency savings enabled by energy infrastructure upgrades.

ECP Forms Solar ^ Storage Development Platform

In July 2022, ECP formed New Leaf to acquire and spin-off Borrego Solar’s development platform. New Leaf is a leading developer of distributed and utility-scale solar and storage projects in the U.S.

2023

ECP Completes Take-Private of Leading UK Waste Management Platform

In January 2023, ECP completed the take private of Biffa, the UK’s leading integrated waste and recycling firm, in a ~£2.1 billion enterprise value transaction.

ECP Makes Preferred Equity Investment in Brownfield Conversion of Refinery into Renewable Fuels

In April 2023, ECP made a $300 million preferred equity investment in Braya Renewable Fuels, the owner and operator of refinery in Canada, which is converting to renewable and sustainable aviation fuel operations.

ECP Acquires Leading Utility-Scale Renewable Platform

In December 2023, ECP acquired Triple Oak Power, a utility-scale wind developer aiming to help shape a more diverse, reliable, and sustainable power grid.
